Sangdong Town, Yongwueol-ri, Muan County is a group habitat consisting mainly of White Herons and Common Herons. Every March and April herons fly in from Southeast Asia to breed and then fly back south in October. Each year, nearby Mt. Cheongyong features a magnificent view of the fluttering white feathers of over 4,000 white herons, common herons, and snowy herons.
Along with the small manmade island in the nearby Yongyeon Reservoir, the scene of herons surrounding the island invokes a sense of wonder. The town has always considered the flocks of herons as harbingers of good fortune, believing that their mass breeding fosters a plentiful harvest and good fortune. As a result, the townsfolk have always taken great care of and protected the birds.
